One of the best things about running my own business isn’t the flexibility (though school pickups and dentist appointments would like to argue). It’s the people.
The clients who trust me with their behind-the-scenes mess.
The mentors who showed me what was possible.
The colleagues who quietly champion my work.
The small business owners who become more like family than contacts.
This work – especially as a service-based business owner – can be bloody lonely sometimes. But it can also be deeply connected if you let it. And over the years, I’ve found that even the smallest gestures of appreciation go a long way.
So here are some of my favourite ways to celebrate the incredible humans in my circle – and ones you can borrow, adapt, or make your own.
✨ Leave a Review
A five-minute gesture that can make someone’s week.
Leave them a Google review, a LinkedIn recommendation, or even just a kind comment on one of their posts.
When you’re a small business owner, those words matter more than we often admit. They help build trust with new clients and give them the warm fuzzies on a hard day.
✨ Tag Them, Refer Them, Recommend Them
You know those Facebook threads: “Can anyone recommend…?”
Be the person who pipes up and tags your people.
Even if it’s not exactly in your area of expertise, your recommendation plants a seed, and in small business, word of mouth is still the gold standard.
✨ Write (or Send) a Thank-You Note
We’re in such a rush to tick off the next thing that we forget the power of pausing to say: hey, I see you – thank you.
Whether it’s a heartfelt email, a cheeky card in the mail, or even a coffee voucher with a note that says you deserve a flat white that’s still hot, it doesn’t need to be fancy to be meaningful.
✨ Nominate Them for Something
Awards, features, or even just a shout-out in your own newsletter, take the time to lift someone else up.
We often assume someone else will do it. But if you notice someone quietly doing brilliant work? Say so.
✨ Surprise Them With Something Thoughtful
This one is optional – and doesn’t have to be expensive – but sending a small gift from another small business (win-win!) can make someone’s day.
I once sent a client a candle with a note that said “because you light up your clients’ lives — and I reckon you deserve a quiet moment too.”
It wasn’t about the candle. It was about the care behind it.
Why It Matters
Because at the end of the day, this whole “business” thing? It’s just people.
We’re all just trying to do good work, pay the bills, and not completely lose our minds in the process.
Taking the time to celebrate the people in your circle reminds them they’re seen, valued, and not alone in this messy, magical small business world.
And really, that’s what it’s all about.
Over to You:
What’s your favourite way to celebrate the people in your business world?
Do you send little gifts? Shout them out online? Show up in their DMs with encouraging words?
Because:
💛 Small business. Big heart. Always.
